There were 717 rapes in Nigeria between January and May this year, amounting to one rape every five hours, the country's police chief says.

Muhammad Adamu described rape as a serious and wicked offence and urged Nigerians to report any case.

Speaking to journalists after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential palace in Abuja, the police chief said that 799 suspects had been arrested and 631 had appeared in court.

But Mr Adamu did not speak about the sentences or number of convictions. Activists are concerned that not many trials result in a someone being found guilty.

Some of the recent victims were allegedly murdered after being raped prompting a series of protests across Nigeria demanding action from the authorities and communities.

The police chief said security agencies are partnering with non-governmental organisations in the areas of training, working with victims and evidence gathering for successful prosecutions as part of efforts to tackle the issue.

Évariste Ndayishimiye will become president on Thursday

Burundi's foreign ministry says the country's newly-elected president, Évariste Ndayishimiye, will be sworn in on Thursday - two months earlier than planned.

The fast-tracked ceremony follows the death last week of the incumbent, Pierre Nkurunziza.

In a letter, the foreign ministry invited diplomats and foreign organisations to attend the inauguration in the capital, Gitega.

Mr Ndayishimiye is a former Hutu rebel and army general, like his predecessor.

He received the backing of Mr Nkurunziza before winning the presidential election in May.

He had been due to be sworn in August, but the Constitutional Court brought forward the ceremony following the death of the president.

The police in Mozambique say they have arrested six religious leaders who tried to get around the coronavirus restrictions by holding services for their followers up in the mountains.

Officials in Milange district close to the border with Malawi say they switched from holding their services in their normal premises to try to avoid getting caught for breaking the ban on large gatherings.

Mozambique has recorded less than 600 cases of coronavirus and three deaths.
